Wheel or Slip Lighters
|
Taper Amadou Wheel Lighter Combination
w/ French Tax Seal implying a date of late 1920s. This is a lighter with a 'backup'. The spark wheel will spin either direction; if you want to light the petrol wick, it is turned one way. If you are out of petrol or it is windy, spin the other direction to light the fusee. 'Taper Amadou' is a French generic term for this sort of lighter - particularly the fusee part - which can literally mean 'tinder type' or, more colloquially and going back centuries, meaning a short torch of inflammables ignited by a flint.

Aluminum Slip Lighters
c. 1930s. Two examples of a popular style aluminum slip lighter. The French Tax Seals date both of these prior to WW2 and after 1927 because of the specific tax seal used. The cases are cut out to reveal the tax plate which is on the works of the lighter.
