The earliest models used replaceable butane gas refill cartridges - later versions had refillable tanks that were filled with cartridges. The cartridges were good for multiple uses as each has a valve at the top held shut by the pressure of the gas. When the tank was empty, only a hole showed; when gas remained, the hole was closed. The bottoms of the two tank types are shown below. The tanks are interchangeable.
